Dating the Exodus

Every commentary in the Gospel Scholar Archive that uses the phrase “date of the exodus,” and where it lands: the fifteenth century of a literal 1 Kings 6:1, the thirteenth of Ramesses II, undecided between them, or neither. Each position was read on the page, and every row links to the pages it rests on.

How this was made

On 30 October 2026 the archive's concordance was searched for the exact phrase “date of the exodus” in paths containing “Commentar”. It returned 122 page hits in 63 volumes. Six of those are second copies of a book already counted, which leaves 57 works. For each one the pages where it takes a position were read and saved, and where a hit fell only in a bibliography, an endnote or a series introduction, the volume was searched for the discussion itself. Every quotation here was checked against the archive's text layer on the page it cites.

The axis places each work at the date it gives. An undecided work spans the options it sets out, with a dot at the end it leans toward. The lines mark 1446, from a literal reading of the 480 years in 1 Kings 6:1, and about 1260, under Ramesses II.

Archive problems

The NAC file labelled “Genesis 1–11:26” is a second copy of Mathews's vol. 1B, and the file labelled “Judges & Ruth” is a second copy of Howard's Joshua. Neither the real vol. 1A nor Judges & Ruth appears to be in the archive.
No title page in the archive names the authors of NAC Exodus (Stuart) and NAC Joshua (Howard). Both are inferred from their prefaces.
On two-column pages (the New Jerome, Eerdmans) the reading tool stops partway down. Those quotations were checked against the full text layer.

Not covered

The search matched one exact phrase. A commentary that discusses the date in other words (“the early date”, “1446”) without using it does not appear here. Hubbard's Joshua and Younger's Judges, in the NIV Application Commentary, are two known cases.
